          Austin Marchese named 2019 Vanier Scholar

          Austin Marchese named 2019 Vanier Scholar

          This week, Austin Marchese was named one of 2019’s Vanier Scholars, Canada’s most prestigious award for doctoral studies.

          Marchese, who is supervised by Professor Mark Lautens, is recognized for his research proposal "Novel Enantioselective Nickel-Catalyzed Transformations Forming Medicinally and Industrially Relevant Halogenated Compounds".

          It may come as a surprise, but carbon dioxide, the infamous greenhouse gas driving climate change, is also a leading contender in the replacement of hydrofluorocarbons in the next-generation of “green?refrigeration systems.

          It offers many advantages over second and third generation refrigerants, including higher volumetric cooling capacity, lower operating temperatures, non-flammability, reduced operating costs, and lower global warming potential.           Professor Eugenia Kumacheva wins de Gennes Prize

          Professor Eugenia Kumacheva has been named winner of the prestigious de Gennes Prize awarded biannually for outstanding and exceptional work in the field of materials chemistry by the Royal Society of Chemistry (U.K.)

          Prof. Kumacheva has won the award for the design of soft and self-assembled new materials with biomedical applications.


          Chemistry researchers take home NSERC honours

          Chemistry researchers take home NSERC honours

          Professors Doug Stephan, Dwight Seferos and Barbara Sherwood Lollar were recognized today with prestigious NSERC honours.

          Professor Stephan is the winner of the John C. Polanyi award for his work in frustrated Lewis pairs. Prof. Seferos is a recipient of an E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship for his advances in synthetic chemistry. Prof. Lollar received the Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for her research on water and the life it supports.
